How are air ambulance costs determined?

We provide an all-inclusive bed-to-bed quote. The quote includes an ICU configured jet, specialized medical team, equipment, supplies, medications, ground ambulance transport on both ends, and hospital admission/acceptance. What does bed-to-bed service mean?

Bed-to-bed service is when the medical team from the air ambulance will go to the discharging hospital to meet the patient in their room, do an assessment of the patient and comfort them about the transfer. They then travel with the patient in the ground ambulance to the aircraft. The same process takes place at the arrival city where the medical team travels with the patient to the receiving facility. They will provide a briefing for the receiving hospital nurse. This provides continuity of care for the entire transfer.

How do I pay for the air ambulance?

Global Reach Medical accepts certified checks, credit cards, and bank wire transfers. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. A combination of credit cards is acceptable. All services must be paid prior to aircraft dispatch.

Is air ambulance transport covered by insurance?

Air ambulance insurance coverage varies significantly by insurance company and each plan they offer. Coverage is usually dependent on transport to the nearest appropriate hospital and medical necessity. When is a medical escort recommended or necessary?

Medical escorts are recommended when patients require medical supervision and assistance during travel due to health concerns, but their condition does not medically warrant air ambulance transport.

Who is not a viable candidate for air transport with a medical escort?
  • Patients that cannot safely be transported seated or do not fit on a standard-size airport wheelchair.
  • A patient who cannot sit at 90 degrees for the duration of take-off, landing, and airport check-in and out.
  • A patient unable to walk with one man’s assistance to enter a lavatory on a commercial flight.
  • A patient on isolation restrictions with anything contagious to the rest of the passengers.
  • A patient requiring any equipment restricted by the airline on regular passenger seats

Commercial Airline Stretcher
​​What types of patients can travel by commercial airline stretcher?

Patients with limited mobility or bedridden who do not need high flow oxygen and are certified fit-to-fly by their sending physician for transport via commercial airline stretcher. Each airline has different restrictions on the type of equipment and amount of oxygen allowed on board by the medical team. The required airline medical forms must be fully completed and are approved on case-by-case booking basis. Global Reach Medical facilitates the entire approval and booking process.

What types of patients are not suitable for commercial airline stretcher?
  • Domestic travel patients.
  • Patients that cannot be safely transported or do not fit on a standard size airline stretcher.
  • Patients who are not hemodynamically stable to safely support their entire transport journey.
  • Patients on isolation restrictions with anything contagious to the rest of the passengers.
  • Patients that may require invasive equipment restricted by the airline during flight.
Is this service available for domestic flights?

No, airlines do not offer this service for domestic flights as it requires significant planning and coordination therefore not cost-effective for them to provide.

Do all airlines offer this service?

No, not all international airlines offer this service. Global Reach Medical maintains a list of the airlines who offer this service on international flights. The airlines that do offer the stretcher option, availability depends on the space during the requested flight date and approval from the airline medical department. Therefore, we suggest as much notice as possible to arrange each transport appropriately and on time.

What approvals do you need?

Global Reach Medical will obtain a fit-to-fly certification form from the patient’s sending physician. This form, along with the patient’s current medical record, will be reviewed by our medical team and the airline’s medical department to confirm the patient can safely be transported by commercial airline stretcher.

Does insurance cover commercial stretcher?

Few health insurance plans cover international commercial stretcher services. There are some travel insurance plans that do cover the services because it is a more cost-effective option to a private air ambulance. Global Reach Medical can assist with a policy review and as necessary contact your insurance plan for final determination and approval.

Can family members accompany the patient?

When traveling on a commercial airline, family members or companions can book their seats in economy or business class and visit the patient during the commercial flight.
